One of the things that I was most excited about traveling to San Diego was the opportunity to have some great carne asada. When searching for a great local restaurant, what I discovered was a new combination of foods called Carne Asada Fries. It made me curious, and the continuous raving about them made me feel like I had to give them a try.
Based on a recommendation, we ventured into Lolita's Taco Shop in San Diego. We ordered a couple burrito's and a side of Carne Asada Fries. Carne Asada Fries is a layer crispy french fries, covered with sour cream, guacamole, and cheese. On top of that is a heaping amount of delicious carne asada beef, and more cheese sprinkled on. At first I was a skeptic, until I took my first fork-full. It was amazing. This food is popular in San Diego, but is something that would be appreciated everywhere. It's the upgraded version of chili cheese fries. After eating it for awhile, it became less obscure and just natural that beef and fries should be enjoyed together. Although classified as a side, this dish could be enjoyed as a main course. The crispness of the french fries, blended with the tenderness of the steak, and brought together by the sour cream and guacamole gives a dish that has great texture along with great taste.
This was one meal that I won't soon forget. It was a simple combination of food that created a great entree. If you are ever down in San Diego, or anywhere that offers this meal, I would strongly recommend getting it because it's unlike any other Mexican food you'll ever taste.
